Chemical Vapor Sensor

Fido Explosives Detection System. Uses Amplifying Fluorescence Polymer (AFP) to detect trace levels of explosive substances. Presence of an explosive substance reduces intensity of fluorescence of the polymer, and a photodetector senses this light reduction. Fido system is extremely sensitive, demonstrating a 1 femtogram (parts per quadrillion) lower detection limit. This makes Fido ideal for an area reduction tool rather than a source of primary detection. Used in the place of search dogs for explosives detection by US Army in Afghanistan.

Projected Price of device: $28,000
